Road works fuelled by a £6.25 million investment begin across all seven towns in Ealing this month (June, 2022).

In Acton, Perivale, Greenford, Hanwell, Northolt and Southall around 80 roads and pavements will be repaired or improved in plans that form part of a larger four-year Highways Improvement Programme approved by Ealing Council.

The programme of repairs also hopes to tackle high rates of carbon emissions in the borough with enhancements that make it safer for people to travel by foot, bike or scooter on Ealing roads.

Describing the plans as ambitious, council leader Peter Mason said the road works were "not a case of just going out and making repairs or resurfacing".

"We are enhancing our streets and roads wherever possible as well – for example, looking at how we can make it easier for pedestrians to cross, or those with mobility issues or disabilities to safely get around".

As well as safer routes for 'active travel', cllr Mason added the council will look for opportunities to re-green, re-grow and re-wild streets in Ealing, and by planting more trees create biodiverse urban drainage systems that minimise existing flood risks in the borough.

In compliment to the climate-friendly road works planned is a further £1 million investment to expand the number of bike hangars in Ealing and the School Streets programme launched in September.

Added to these initiatives are the new and improved methods for road repairs which contractors employed by the council will utilise, such as a 'warm mix' asphalt to re-surface roads instead of the traditional 'hot mix'.

Among the benefits of warm mix asphalt is a 10-15% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and faster re-opening of roads than is possible when using a hot mix.

An annual condition survey, monthly inspections for main roads and quarterly reviews of smaller roads determine the schedule of road renewals in Ealing.

Concerns about the safety of roads or pavements can be reported on the council's website here.
