Ealing: Event asking residents what the Acton Mount means to them

A 'collective conversation' about the future of the Acton Mount area, Ealing, is being held next week.

Members of the community are encouraged to come along and express their thoughts about the site, situated next to St Marys Church and Morrisons.

The event is being run by the social capital building organisation MutualGain, who are inviting local people to pitch ideas for an available £15,000 of funding to help address themes that arise from the event.

The historic space is at the heart of Acton but, according to Peter Robertson from the project steering group, it is "lacking a focus".

Robertson said: "We want to make it feel like a space that could be more than just a place to walk through.

"The whole point of this event is to ask people who live in Acton what they want it to be, so who knows what they'll come up with.

"We want to show that it's a very democratic process, and maybe we will get voices that perhaps didn't get picked up by local councillors."

The initiative is going ahead with the support of the Metropolitan Police.

Robertson added: "It's not a law and order thing. It's not about getting rid of anyone we don't like the look of on the Mount.

"It's more that this is a space used by lots of different groups of people, what is it that all these different groups of people would like to see?

"People can still go there and drink cups of tea and see their friends, it's not about turning it into some kind of gated exclusion zone, it's about questioning how we can make it a welcoming and thriving hub of the community."

Attendees will be asking the questions:

What does the Mount mean to you?

How would you like to see it improve?

What would you be willing to do to make change possible?

There is £20 payment available to people usually unable to attend such events and they hope the payment incentive will encourage unemployed people to come and participate in the conversation.

Taking place on Tuesday 14 September, 4pm-6pm, everyone is invited to attend.
