Events coming up in Ealing
Friday: Hangmen
The Olivier award-winning dark comedy...
There is a bit more life in the air at the local Hangman's family pub - and it's not down to the quirky cronies at the bar. Today, hanging has been abolished. For good.
With Harry's face plastered across the front pages, his status as second best hangman and local celebrity continues to thrive. But when a menacing young Londoner strolls up to the bar, something says he's after more than a pint and a bag of peanuts… Harry may have hung up the noose for good, but will he ever wash one man's blood off his hands?
Written by Oscar award-winner Martin McDonagh (In Bruges, Three Billboards) this wickedly funny satire fuses an undeniably dark tale with the mundanity of Northern pub life, undercut with McDonagh's idiosyncratic humour. Set in 1960s Lancashire, this fast paced dark comedy will grip you until the bitter end.
Saturday: Cold War - Film Screening and Discussion
A joint presentation and screening by Jon Davies and Michael Brooke, Watermans two resident film experts, who finally get the chance to meet in the flesh for a entertaining and informative look at Pawel Pawlikowski's multi award winning drama.
It has more poignancy than when released given the times we live in, but stands on its own as one of the finest period dramas of the past decade. Cold War (15) Pawe Pawlikowski follows the Oscar-winning Ida with this stunning and epic romance set against the backdrop of post-war Europe.
Sumptuously shot in luminous black and white, it spans decades and nations to tell a love story that is as tragic as it is moving, and as transportive as it is honest.
Sunday: Suburban Steps to Rockland - The Story of the Ealing Club
Cast aside by most of the Central London promoters due to the loudness of their music, guitarist Alexis Korner and harmonica player Cyril Davies one day jumped into a sidecar and travelled across London to find a venue that would accept the sound of electric blues guitar.
In West London, they bumped into an Iranian student named Fery Asgari, who was the event manager of a dingy concrete-floored basement bar used by local university students.
The first Ealing Club gig took place on the 17th of March 1962. Soon young aspiring musicians from all over the country started congregating there and performing during Alexis and Cyril's sets.
The list of youngsters who learnt the blues at the Ealing Club include: Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker, Paul Jones, Brian Jones, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Dick Taylor, Jeff Beck and Eric Burdon (just to name a few).
