Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has urged motorists to rethink using their cars after London was found to be the most congested city in the world.

A report published by Inrix, a traffic analytics company, on 10th January found that London had the highest amount of traffic on earth for the second year running.

Khan took to Twitter following this report to share his thoughts that motorists needed to look at other modes of transport to help reduce this number.

He wrote in direct response to the study: "Last year, drivers in London spent 156 hours in traffic. Yet two-thirds of all car journeys in our city could be walked or cycled in less than 20 minutes. We urgently need to shift local trips from cars to more efficient modes."

The study by Inrix found that motorists spent 156 hours in traffic in the capital during 2022, one hour more than Chicago in second place with 155 houra and a 5% increase from London's figure in 2021.

It was also found that motorists in London spent an average of £188 more on fuel in 2022 than they had in 2021 due to the increase in time spent in the car and surging oil prices.

Bob Pishue, the report's author, said: "Congestion has been generally increasing, as traffic patterns begin to look more like they did in 2019 than in 2021.

"In the UK, London continued its reign at the top of the Global Traffic Scorecard Impact Rank as the UK continues to see more light commercial vehicles and heavy goods vehicles than it did prior to the COVID19 pandemic."
