THE revised planning application to install ANPR cameras along with parking meters at Gunnersbury Park's car park is likely to be approved.

An earlier application was rejected due to signs and equipment being too large and damaging the heritage site.

A Hounslow Council planning officer however is now recommending that permission be given and visitors start getting charged to park.

Friends of Gunnersbury Park & Museum have objected to this, despite their acceptance that the Community Interest Company (CIC) which runs Gunnersbury Park is in need of extra revenue.

They argue that this should not trump other concerns.

Their points of concern are:

  • The impact of the unwelcoming signage on the overall visitor experience.
  • The use of the title 'private land' on signage in a public park.
  • The language used which is unfriendly, unclear and sometimes verbose and officious.
  • The design which ignores the more elegant purple house-style signage in the Park.
  • The unnecessary intrusiveness of the highest signs.
  • The attempts to argue that the conservation area is of no significance in relation to these ugly proposals.

Revenue from the parking charges would go directly to the Gunnersbury CIC, whereas Gemini Parking Solutions - which will be in charge of the ANPR cameras - will keep the revenues from the fines.

Charges for the car park have not yet been set, but it's expected to cost £2 per hour to park, except for Blue Badge holders who will be free of charge.
