A new set of hedgehog highways is set to be created in West London by The Zoological Society of London and Ealing Wildlife Group.

In an effort to stave off the extinction of hedgehogs, The Zoological Society of London's HogWatch has been going since 2016 and will now be expanded into Ealing.

Hedgehogs are now classed as Vulnerable to Extinction and hedgehog highways are small holes in fences which allow the animals to pass more freely through gardens so that they can find food.

ZSL's London HogWatch Project Manager, Kate Scott-Gatty said, "Our survey shows that gardens and allotments are particularly important habitats for hedgehogs in Ealing and connecting them is critical for their long-term survival in the area."

The joint project will also use cameras to survey existing hedgehog populations, create new habitats for them, and educate local people about how they can help.

Ealing Wildlife Group Chair, Sean McCormack said, "We're delighted with the success of our project's first phase in Hanwell and now really need help to roll out Hedgehog Highways across the borough.

"Improving and connecting hedgehog habitats will help lots of other wildlife species and give our Ealing community the chance to discover the value of protecting nature and green spaces."

A crowdfunding page has been set up for this project, they have so far raised over £8,000 and are looking to raise over £10,000 to pursue the project.
