EALING Southall MP, Virendra Sharma, will host a Parliamentary meeting on April 13 to commemorate the Jallianwala Bagh massacre 102 years on.

The Labour MP will be speaking to academics, MPs and campaigners about how the massacre still has an impact on the relationship between Britain and India today.

The Jallianwala Bagh massacre took place in 1919, where 50 British soldiers shot and killed over 400 innocent civilians and injured a further 1,200 people.

The Indian diaspora community has richly enhanced British culture, but the massacre is known as one of the worst atrocities to take place in India, leaving a detrimental impact on British-Indo relations.

In 2019, Theresa May spoke about the massacre and described the events: "As a shameful scar on British Indian history."

In 1997, the Queen visited Jallianwala Bagh and she described the massacre: "Distressing example of our past history with India, we deeply regret what happened and the suffering caused."

Some of the speakers attending the event are; Dr Shalini Sharma from the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre 1919 Centenary Committee, Gawain Little from the NEU, Vanessa Holburn author of The Amritsar Massacre: The British Empire's Worst Atrocity, and Dr Binita Kane co-founder of South Asia Heritage Month.

The event is open to the general public and should you wish to join you can do so HERE.
