In celebration of Black History Month this October, there are a host of events being held across Ealing designed to educate, inspire, and bring the community together.  

This year's theme is 'Reclaiming Narratives' and the importance of reclaiming the narrative of Black history in the UK, highlighting the need for accurate representation, celebration of achievements, and empowerment through storytelling.  

From inspiring creative workshops to discussions on historical Black pioneers, there are opportunities right across the borough for people of all ages to learn and participate. 

Pioneers of Black football

Ealing Central Library, Tuesday 22 October, 6pm  

Football enthusiasts will enjoy this fascinating talk by David Gleave and Bill Hearn, who will explore the legacy of black footballers from the 1970s to the 1990s, including those who played for local west London clubs.

A must-attend for those interested in sports history and diversity in football. 

Ealing's Pioneering Black Bookshop

Ealing Central Library, Thursday 24 October, 5.30pm  

Local history buffs won't want to miss this talk by Jonathan Oates on the influential publication house of Eric and Jessica Huntley, L'Bogle Ouverture. The talk will shed light on the couple's role in shaping the Black literary landscape in Ealing.

Children's creative workshop inspired by Benjamin Zephaniah  

Ealing Central Library, Monday 28 October, midday – 3pm 

Children will have the opportunity to express their creativity in a workshop led by Grace Quansah, inspired by the works of renowned poet Benjamin Zephaniah. Participants will create their own pieces and have the chance to perform them at the end of the session. 

Darcus Beese – Rebel with a Cause 

Ealing Central Library, Thursday 31 October, 6pm 

Former record label boss Darcus Beese, son of civil rights activist Darcus Howe, will discuss his new book Rebel With a Cause. This event promises to be an enlightening discussion on music, activism, and personal legacy. 

Ealing Council leader, Peter Mason said: "Black History Month is a time to reflect on the rich cultural heritage and important contributions of the Black community, both in Ealing and beyond.  

"This year's theme reminds us of the importance of championing Black stories that are often misrepresented or forgotten, and ensure Black voices and experiences are acknowledged and heard."
