Hanwell Town just came up short as they lost 3-2 at home against Bracknell Town in the Southern League Premier South.
The Geordies led at the break after Flo Bojaj turned home from close range right before half-time, having already had one chalked off for offside.
But Bracknell quickly turned the tides as a trio of goals from Gary Abisogun, Darryl Sanders from the spot, and Kamaron English before Lewis Cole pulled one back for the Geordies.
Defeat sees Hanwell remain in midtable obscurity, nine points from the relegation zone and eight points from the play-offs.
Kain Adom won a free-kick on the edge of the box within ten minutes and Bojaj was teed up, his shot looked like it might have struck an arm before the ball dropped for Jacob Gardiner-Smith, who sent it over the top.
Abisogun received the ball in the box under pressure from Isaac Olorunfemi, the forward was able to turn and get his shot off, but it went wide of the target.
After 38 minutes the Geordies thought they had the lead after a corner was whipped to the back post, and after a deflection Bojaj poked it home, but the flag was up for offside.
They did not have to wait too much longer for the real thing as Dan Carr slid the ball to Adom, his driving run took him down the side of the box and he squared the ball low to find Bojaj and he turned the ball home.
Nine minutes into the second half a long throw from Mat Mackenzie saw Dwayne Duncan a whisker away from winning the header and his pressure caused Michael Eacott to initially drop his catch, before managing to gather at the second time of asking.
On the hour mark Bracknell won a corner and Sanders whipped it onto the head of Jack Dean, his glancing header sent the ball to the back post for Abisogun to tap into the net.
Just seven minutes later Bracknell won a penalty after Ben Harris was brought down in the area, and Sanders stepped up and dispatched the penalty beyond Max Merrick.
Bracknell's stellar 15 minutes was capped off when English spotted Merrick's off his line from out wide and instead of crossing, sent the ball straight into the back of the net.
With a little more than ten minutes remaining, the Geordies set up a grand stand finish as the ball sat up for Cole on the edge of the area and he volleyed it beyond Eacott.
There was a big chance for an equaliser as Justin Obikwu went clean through on goal, but his finish was weak and Eacott made a comfortable save.
Then in stoppage time Calum Duffy hit a shot on the turn that the Bracknell 'keeper did well to hold on to.
