CHISATO MINAMIMURA – SCORED IN SILENCE, Waterman's

Scored in Silence is a solo digital sign language performance by London-based Deaf Japanese artist Chisato Minamimura. The show unpacks the hidden perspectives of Deaf people from the small number that survived the horrors of the atomic bomb atrocity in Japan in 1945.

Survivors of the A-bomb are known as "hibakusha," and the final performance is based on a period of research, interviews and original films of elderly Deaf people with lived experiences of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Minamimura brings these untold narratives into stark relief, touching upon the atrocity of the event and its aftermath, including the layers of discrimination experienced by these isolated members of Japanese society.

Cezanne - Provincial from Provence to Father of Modern Art. A lecture presented by The Arts Society Ealing

A Provencal from birth whose love of his native land was a constant, Cézanne painted determinedly and single-mindedly following his own path. He never gained entry to l'Ecole des Beaux Arts nor had a work accepted by the Salon. Difficult, touchy and anti-social, but capable of strong friendships (Zola and Pissarro) success eluded him until his old age. Then, confronted by his strong colours, single brushstrokes and original viewpoint, Picasso, Braque, and others were inspired to call him the "Father of Modern Art."

This lecture links in with the current exhibition at Tate Modern.

Our lecturer, Elizabeth Strang was recruited as a Guide when Tate Modern opened in 2000 and has since worked at both Tate Modern and Tate Britain. She specialises in 20th century art, and lectures widely on the subject.

This talk is at 7:30pm on Monday 23rd January online via Zoom.
