Award-winning filmmaker Aki Kaurismäki (Le Havre, The Other Side of Hope) makes a masterful return with Fallen Leaves, a timeless, hopeful and ultimately satisfying love story about two lonely souls’ path to happiness – and the numerous hurdles they encounter along the way.

Set in contemporary Helsinki, and shot through with Kaurismäki’s typically playful, idiosyncratic style and deadpan humour, this tender romantic tragicomedy is a timely reminder of the potency of movie-going from one of cinema’s living legends.

After the spectacular international success of their Vincent Van Gogh tribute Loving Vincent (2017), DK and Hugh Welchman have used the same enthralling technique of animated oil painting to adapt Władysław Reymont’s Nobel-winning epic novel (1904-9).

With a visual style consciously inspired by paintings by Reymont’s Polish contemporaries, the film tells a story spanning the four seasons, in which a young woman’s attempts to assert her independence keep coming up against the patriarchal traditions that have held sway in her village for centuries. 

Special Event Cinema: 

French Impressions: Maigret (15) - Saturday 9 December, Film talk at 1pm; Film Screening at 2.30pm 

One of France's most consistently entertaining directors, Patrice Leconte has turned to the giant of French detectives. Maigret, for his latest release here, and to make it even more special has chosen Gérard Depardieu for the role.

Jon Davies will be looking at Leconte's exceptional career and introducing the audience to a short history of Commissaire Jules Maigret himself.

Exhibition on Screen: Klimt – the Kiss (12A) - Sunday 10 December, 2pm 

The Kiss by Gustav Klimt is one of the most recognised and reproduced paintings in the world. It is perhaps the most popular poster on student dorm walls from Beijing to Boston.

Painted in Vienna around 1908, the evocative image of an unknown embracing couple has captivated viewers with its mystery, sensuality and dazzling materials ever since it was created.

But just what lies behind the appeal of the painting – and just who was the artist that created it? 

Royal Opera House Live: The Nutcracker (12A cert tbc) - Tue 12 December, 7.15pm 

Join Clara at a delightful Christmas Eve party that becomes a magical adventure once everyone else is tucked up in bed. Marvel at the brilliance of Tchaikovsky’s score, as Clara and her enchanted Nutcracker fight the Mouse King and visit the Sugar Plum Fairy in the glittering Kingdom of Sweets.

Peter Wright’s much-loved production for The Royal Ballet, with gorgeous period designs by Julia Trevelyan Oman, keeps true to the spirit of this festive ballet classic, combining the thrill of the fairy tale with spectacular dancing. 

A Christmas Carol - Encore (PG) - Thu 14 December, 7.30pm 

Based on Dickens' own performance adaptation, Simon Callow and director-designer Tom Cairns one-man extravaganza of festive story-telling that is both heart-warming and deeply moving returns to the big screen.

A Christmas must see! Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol is one of the most beloved books in the English language. It has become a classic Christmas tale for generations of grown-ups and children alike.  

In the Theatre: 

The Pixie and the Pudding (4 – 11 years) - Little Angel Theatre - 9 – 30 December, 10.30am, 1.30pm and 4.30pm (See website for performance days) 

When Charlie and her dad move to the farm from the city, everything seems to go wrong. Dolly the cow’s in a grump, there’s not an egg to be found, and even the cockerel has stopped crowing! If only they’d paid attention to the mysterious note left on their windowsill about a curious pixie and the pudding she likes to eat on Christmas Eve… 

This enchanting musical brings a tale from Scandinavian folklore to life with puppetry, original music and a sprinkling of pixie magic.
