NumberWorks 'n Words is a maths and English tutoring service for 5–16-year-olds first established in 1984.

At the heart of their Ealing branch is Samina Masud, an experienced teacher at NumberWorks 'n Words.

Samina believes tutoring is designed to complement school education, reinforcing what is taught in the classroom.

She said: "Advising parents for tuition is one of the things I as a teacher hated, to tell the parents that your child needs to have extra tuition because that sounds like I have failed as a teacher."

Her experience taught her that students may require more personalised attention due to the increasing pace and volume of the curriculum and more recently gap in schooling due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

What makes NumberWorks 'n Words tutoring different is its dedication to making learning fun, celebrating success and fostering a positive environment where students can build their confidence.

Samina said: "A lot of the children come in with having zero confidence because they've seen other children do well in class, but they are not in competition with the person sitting next to them.

"They should only focus on their work and their academic journey."

The secret ingredient to NumberWorks 'n Words success lies in a blend of a holistic teaching approach and interactive sessions.

Samina explained: "It's not like giving them sheets to say, 'fill that in.' It's actually talking to them as well, having a discussion and fun activities to keep the students motivated to learn."

Parents may wonder whether tutoring is worth the cost, but Samina advises that starting early can make all the difference in a pupil's learning journey.

"If your child is failing or not doing as well and is in year four, you should be looking at your child because that's when they've had about four years of schooling.

"If they're keeping up with the rest, that's fine. If they're not, then something needs to be done because year five and year six become much harder", she said.

Samina added: "I'm not saying the learning before year five and six is not difficult for them, it is. But it's in smaller chunks.

"It gets at a speed later on."

NumberWorks 'n Words wants students to not only be spending more time on learning outside school, but to ensure that they are digesting what is being taught to them.

Samina said: "Whatever we do at NumberWorks 'n Words, we make sure that children understand.

"When they understand, then whatever question you present to them, they will be able to answer it confidently."
