Reduce, Reuse and Recycle with Ealing Broadway
To commemorate this year's belated Recycle Week (17th – 23rd October) Ealing Broadway is shining a spotlight on its recycle partner, Love Not Landfill and Act For Ealing, the climate action community group.
Since September 2018, Ealing Broadway has worked with Love Not Landfill to provide locals with a sustainable way to recycle their old or unwanted clothes.
A non-profit organisation funded by a partnership between the Mayor of London and the London boroughs, Love Not Landfill aims to encourage people to buy second-hand, swap, recycle, and donate their fashion to charity.
Ealing Broadway is home to two Love Not Landfill clothes banks, located by entrance to St. Saviour's Walk and on the First Floor in the centre, where visitors can donate their once-loved items to go onto a new home.
January saw Ealing Broadway's biggest spike in donations, with over a tonne (1,054kgs) of clothes donated. To increase numbers even further, Love Not Landfill are continuing to raise awareness of foodbanks over the next few months, and are preparing to co-host charity swap shop events with the centre.
All types of clothes and textiles can be donated to the banks, including those that have been damaged. Once donated, clothes that can be reused are given to Good, a business who own and operate a variety of vintage shops across London.
After selecting a small percentage of the clothes to resell in their shops, Good sell the remaining items to rag merchants, with these then shredded and turned into insulation materials or wash cloths.
Alongside their partnership with Love Not Landfill, Ealing Broadway has also partnered with Act for Ealing on a sustainable fashion mural competition. A chance for young people based in Ealing to submit design ideas for a new mural which will be displayed in Ealing Broadway, entrants are encouraged to be as creative as possible, with all entries to be submitted by 11.59pm Sunday 23rd October.
The mural will aim to draw attention to the importance of sustainable fashion and how the local community can reduce their carbon footprint by avoiding fast fashion and choosing secondhand clothing items instead.
In addition to the above partnerships, Ealing Broadway's Ride&Park facility also aims to encourage locals and visitors to become more sustainable by travelling to the centre by bicycle or scooter.
A safe space for storing bicycles and scooters, Ride&Park can be found on the ground floor of the centre next to Chantal Cafe in St. Saviour's Walk via Town Square.
The facility is fitted with CCTV and provides 48 bike spaces and 10 scooter spaces, which can be stored for free for up to 48 hours. After celebrating one year since its opening in June, the facility has seen many visitors in the past year, with countless locals using the repair station to keep their bicycles in top condition.
Andrew Rollings, centre director at Ealing Broadway, said: "Supporting the community in reducing their environmental impact is extremely important to us at Ealing Broadway, and our partnerships that enable us to do this are a key part of our success.
"As a centre, we are committed to working towards a more sustainable future and we want to encourage our visitors to do the same. By shining a spotlight on Love Not Landfill, and the work we do with Act for Ealing, we hope to drive awareness of the important work taking place locally.."
Lizzy Woods, Communications and Campaigns Executive.at Love Not Landfill, said: "Our Ealing Broadway clothes banks are some of the most used banks in the whole of London and it's been great to see locals donating their unwanted clothes so they can go onto a new home or be reused for another purpose.
"Moving forward, we're looking forward to co-hosting swap events over the next few months to increase circularity in Ealing and are excited to see our partnership with Ealing Broadway continue to flourish."
