PAUL GAUGUIN: MAKER OF MYTH. A lecture presented by The Arts Society Ealing

An important source of Gauguin's myth-making was himself: 'I am a great artist and I know it. It's because I know it that I have endured such sufferings. To have done otherwise I would consider myself a brigand – which is what many people think I am'.

Gauguin started off as an Impressionist, but while the Impressionists used painting to capture fleeting glimpses of the physical world, Gauguin argued that art should go beyond material appearances. His work drew upon a wide variety of visual and literary sources; in Brittany, Martinique and Tahiti he explored layers of myth beneath the contemporary reality he found there.

Our lecturer Sarah Stopford's special interests are in British and post-1900 art, as well as the connections between literature and the visual arts. She is a guide and lecturer at Tate Britain and Tate Modern.

This talk is at 7:30pm on Monday 24 October at St Barnabas Church Hall, Pitshanger Lane, Ealing W5 1QG.

Visitors are welcome to attend at £8 per lecture (reduced to £3 for students); payment can be made by cash on the evening or in advance by contacting: [email protected]
