Met arrest Just Stop Oil activists over plans to disrupt Heathrow Airport
Nine activists from controversial environmentalist group Just Stop Oil (JSO) have been arrested at Heathrow Airport this morning, Wednesday 24 July.
Metropolitan Police sources say the group were taken into custody after 'conspiring to disrupt' the airport this morning.
Just Stop Oil has released their own statement, reporting the arrest of seven protestors at two locations on the airport's perimeter road at around 9am, with another two being taken into custody at around 10:50am.
It claims the protestors' plans were part of an 'international uprising', with similar groups causing delays and shutdowns in Norway, Germany, Finland, Spain, and Switzerland.
The group say their own action is part of their ongoing demands for the UK Government to end the use of fossil fuels by 2030 in an attempt to slow the effects of climate change.
A spokesperson from Just Stop Oil said: "We refuse to die for fossil fuels. Continued burning of oil, gas and coal, as we pass irreversible tipping points that threaten to spin our climate out of control in a rapidly accelerating way, is jeopardising the stability on which our entire society depends.
"This is not only irresponsible, it is an act of war against low lying island states and countries in the global south, who are already suffering devastating consequences as a result of our addiction to fossil fuels."
Despite the protestors' efforts, Heathrow Airport continues to operate as usual following the arrests.
The Met commented: "Thanks to the work of officers involved, those arrested have been taken into custody and the Met has prevented significant disruption to the airport and travelling public."
