10:00 - As polls close - what these elections mean

It is easy to forget four years have passed since Britain last had this date at the ballot box.

In 2018, Theresa May was still the prime minister. Words like lockdown, furlough and unprecedented existed but were by and large meaningless. More people had daily commutes. Fewer people owned dogs.

Voters today are unlikely to have recalled the candidates who sought their support four years ago.

More likely at front of minds when it came to mark X in three boxes were Downing Street parties and, in an unprecedented twist for polling stations, porn.

The impact such issues are to have on local government will become clearer once polling stations close at 10pm.

But while local elections are the best way to gauge public opinion in between general elections, their results dictate more about our everyday life in the 1460 days that follow than is rarely, if ever, given credit.

By about 03:00 as results arrive in London analysis on the national mood will start to set quicker than clay.

But once the polls close at 22:00 tonight, we'll bring you the latest updates, reactions and details on anything and everything happening locally for Ealing.
