GUNNERSBURY Park's brand-new sports hub has opened its doors for the first time.

As part of Stage 2 of the government's roadmap out of lockdown, gyms were allowed to reopen on Monday, April 12.

Work began in 2018 on the £13.8 million joint project between Ealing and Hounslow councils, and was expected to be completed in 2019.

The sports hub is located inside Gunnersbury Park and will be operated by the leisure provider, Better.

As well as a state-of-the-art gym with more than 100 machines, there are also two group exercise studios with 'automated' virtual classes.

The venue also hosts eight tennis courts, two floodlit pitches for all weather and 10 grass pitches for football, rugby and cricket.

The indoor sports hall is revealed to offer a range of sports, including competition standard courts for handball, futsal and volleyball.

The hub will also act as a base for a number of sporting organisations, supporting them in their vital work in the local area.

Gary Alderson, Ealing Council's executive director of place, said: "I'm delighted that the sports hub is now open and able to welcome visitors, in line with government rules.

"We have worked alongside our partners Hounslow to ensure we deliver important community, sports and leisure facilities for residents in the local area.

"Our long-term vision will see Gunnersbury Park as a place where local people can enjoy sport, beautiful green spaces and a rich local history long into the future.

"With all the COVID-19 limitations this past year, many people may have been finding it tougher to keep active.

"The new Gunnersbury Park Sports Hub provides an array of opportunities to quickly get reacquainted with good exercise habits or perhaps the chance to start new ones."
