Greenford-man pleads guilty to causing death of woman in A40 crash
A Greenford man has pleaded guilty to causing the death of a 33-year-old woman in a crash on the A40.
Rida Kazem, 23, pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving at Isleworth Crown Court on Thursday 16th February, and he will be sentenced on Friday 21st April.
The court heard that Kazem was driving a car involved in a fatal collision on the westbound A40 near to Park Royal Underground Station at 3:48am on Monday 22nd August.
Kazem was driving with two women in the back of a Range Rover and after going onto the A40 accelerated to approximately 110 mph, almost twice the speed limit, and underestimated a slight bend which caused the vehicle to collide with the kerb.
The high-speed impact meant that one of the back wheels came away and the car spun towards a Tesla car park and smashed into a stationary Tesla with a 50-year-old man sat in it, Kazem's car then flipped over a wall and came to a stop on the railway tracks of Park Royal Tube Station.
Emergency services attended the scene, but Yagmur Ozden, 33, died at the scene despite their best efforts, the second passenger, a woman in her 20s, and the driver of the Tesla have since made full recoveries.
Kazem was taken to hospital with what were initially thought to be critical injuries, but has since made a recovery, he also declined to give a blood sample despite the request from police.
Kazem had two previous speeding offences and had been disqualified from driving after travelling 95 mph in a 50 mph zone, but this ban ended in July 2022.
The Serious Collision Investigation Unit analysed CCTV footage and took witness statements, which led to Kazem being interviewed in October 2022 and he was subsequently charged.
DC Benjamin Simpson, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: "This collision occurred at an incredibly high speed on a public road and the damage caused was extensive.
"I am grateful to all the support we have had from the parties who were involved in the collision and members of the public who assisted us.
"This case was truly horrific and I acknowledge the impact this has had on both the local community and the wider public.
"I would also like to thank the media for respecting Yagmur's family's privacy at this time and throughout the investigation
"This was a difficult case and the police conducted an incredibly thorough and swift investigation which brought this offender to justice.
"The guilty plea's entered today by the defendant are a promising step forward in the way of justice.
"I hope that the sentence imposed by the court will be of comfort to all the victims of this collision and their loved ones moving forwards."
