CHILDREN across Ealing and West London can now benefit from free school science kits and workshops provided to them from the University of West London (UWL).

UWL is offering free workshops for primary and secondary school pupils, as part of a national project to encourage children to take an interest in the world around them and boost uptake of science-based education and careers.

The 'Discovery Bag' learning kits include age-appropriate experiments, workshops and lessons to spark children's curiosity and explore questions including how to keep the planet safe, if a robot can have its own ideas, why the Titanic sunk and how the Great Fire of London spread so quickly.

Dr Manzoorul Abedin, Senior Lecturer in Education and Society and UWL lead for the Initiative, said: "Science is an area which has been badly affected by the pandemic, removing opportunities for children to complete class activity and lab work and that's where the necessity came in.

"These resources are all designed to spark a child's curiosity in understanding our world and how things work.

"The older children get, the less interested they are in science, leading to many pupils disengaging and not pursuing it as a degree subject or career which is what we hope to change."
