Our Event of the Week for this week is an online talk on the history of the Great West Road by the Ealing Civic Society.

The speaker will be James Marshall, who is the author of The History of the Great West Road: its social and economic influence on the surrounding area.

James was formerly Local Studies Librarian for Hounslow Borough Library Service and has given many lectures on local history topics.

The stretch of the Great West Road south of Ealing was opened in 1925 and was known as the Golden Mile because of the concentration of industry along the road.

The factories along this stretch included the Firestone Tyre Company, the Gillette Factory and the Pyrene Fire Extinguisher Company (pictured).

There have been some tragic losses over the years, in particular the Firestone Factory which was demolished over a bank holiday weekend just before it was due to be listed as a protected building.

But a number of examples of Art Deco architecture remain.

All are welcome to come to what will be a fascinating evening, tomorrow (July 8) at 7:30pm.

The Zoom link will be on the Society's Events page.
