Ealing woman sets up home catering business with aim of reducing food waste
A woman from Ealing has set up a home catering business business, while at the same time aiming to reduce food waste.
Kitty Mitchell, 35, is the proud owner of IMperfect Creative Cooking , where she cooks meals from home and sells them to people who are either too busy to cook for themselves, or want to treat themselves to something different than a traditional takeaway.
Mitchell told Nub News: "I've always been involved with hospitality and food and I've always loved cooking, so I decided to start my own business doing something I love where I'm my own boss.
"The meals I cook are 'naughty but nice', as they are a bit of a treat dinner for the weekend, but they always include a variety of vegetables to help diners reach their five-a-day.
"I decided this would be a better way than calculating calories per meal, as some people do just want a nice meal that they can't cook themselves, but healthier than your normal Indian, Chinese or pizza joint."
The mum of two had her soft launch at the end of October, but she officially launched last week.
"It's only my second week and I've already doubled up on my orders compared to last week.
"Last week I received eight orders and this week it's 17, so I'm not accepting any more orders for this week as I need to see whether I can cope with the demand, as I've got two young kids to look after as well," she added.
Apart from her love for cooking and food, the 35-year-old is also very keen on reducing food waste and plastic use.
She said: "I was inspired by my sister who's a zero waste guru, so for the past two years I've changed my family's lifestyle regarding zero waste and reusing whatever we can.
"That's what I'm trying to do here with IMperfect Creative Cooking as well, I go to local businesses on Mondays and see what food they're going to throw out and I take it.
"The food is still perfectly good to eat, it's just that due to the lockdown, most of these businesses aren't using as much of their products as normal and instead of them being thrown out, I take them."
Mitchell uses apps such as Too Good To Go to see which businesses are throwing out food and gets in contact with them.
She also wants to connect with more local businesses throughout Ealing, such as fishmongers and butchers, in order to reduce food waste as much as possible.
Once she picks up her produce on Monday, she releases the weekly menu on Tuesday and customers have until Thursday at 3pm in order to place their orders.
Orders can then be collected on Friday evenings, with deliveries also available.
Adult meals cost £10, but a 'taster' offer means you get half price off your first meal.
