An Ealing Scout Hut needs significant funding for a re-build so it can continue to function as an important scouting space and community hub.

The building at Trumpers Way in Hanwell dates back to 1970 and is in desperate need of a rebuild.

Beavers, Cubs and Scouts make up the 7th Hanwell Scout Group, allowing children aged 6 -16 to take part in the scouting experience, with between 60 -100 children attending the group each week.

The Scouts have a 120-year lease on the building, which expires in 2142.

They have recently agreed with their landlord, Ealing Council, to significantly increase the break clause to 25-years, to allow them to invest in the site.

But they are looking to raise £300k to pay for a complete, modern-day rebuild, including a new kitchen, toilets and more.

Scout leader Adrian Walker said the Trumpers Way site is a key part of the identity of the group, and no alternative facility would fully meet their needs on an ongoing basis.

Adrian said: "This (the rebuild) would mean a huge improvement to the facilities and the Warren, transforming it into a local Community Hub to create a safe and welcoming space for local residents.

"We have a large Scout Group with a healthy waiting list.

"With a new building, we believe a greater number of volunteers/leaders could be attracted to the group, allowing us to bring more young people into the group and deepening 7th Hanwells links and impact on the local community.

He added: "The planned facility would be a valuable resource for decades to come and as such its benefit would be felt by Scout young people and the Hanwell community for many generations.†

The building is used by the Scout Group for their core activities as well as storage for camping equipment by other scout groups in the area.

According to Adrian, the site has room for a new building and a grassed recreation area that could be used for camping and other outdoor challenges.

In addition, they have direct access from the site to the larger space of Elthorne Park which provides further opportunities for traditional scouting activities like orienteering.

Ealing residents Jonathan and his father Brett Slater undertook an epic 21-day cycle across England for 1,000 miles earlier this year, raising over £10,000 towards the scout hut redevelopment.

14-year-old Jonathan, who has autism, is a beaver leader and wanted to complete the ride from Lands End to John O'Groats to raise money for the rebuild.

His father Brett said: "I have seen the amount of work they have done for so many kids.

"The scouts themselves have been incredibly supportive of Jonathan and accepted him 100 per cent as he is."

Brett is hoping to get Jonathan and other scouts to do the Ealing Marathon next year.

The area surrounding Trumpers Way is experiencing significant redevelopment, including new residential housing, which will increase the demand for a local modern building that local clubs and associations can use.

It is hoped the rebuild will allow youth groups, social enterprises, charities, playgroups and many more community groups to operate and deliver services from the Warren.

Adrian added: "This would bring neighbours together, reviving community spirit and improving the lives of many local people including teenagers. In short, it would help to make our neighbourhood thrive."

Jonathan's JustGiving Page is still taking donations towards the hut.
