THE residents of St James' Avenue in West Ealing have decided to keep their Christmas lights up for the entirety of January and raise some money for charity in the process.
The plan was for the lights to be taken down on the Twelfth Night, as per tradition, but that changed when organiser, Andrew Brixey-Williams saw a post on a local Facebook group asking the residents of St James' Avenue to keep their lights up and cheer people's spirits during this difficult time.
He told Nub News: "We went straight back into lockdown at the start of the year and people were asking us to keep the lights up because they like them so much.
"We thought it would be a good idea, as it would help lift people's spirits and light things up a bit."
The lights have now been renamed The St James Avenue Lockdown Lights, as per the new goal of 'lighting things up a bit during this new lockdown.'
At the same time, the residents are also trying to raise money for the Felix Project, who help feed local communities by rescuing surplus food from the food industry and delivering it to any charity that helps feed people.
Brixey-Williams said: "The two ideas - to keep the lights up and to raise money for charity - aren't necessarily linked, but it would be great if we can raise awareness for our fundraising through the lights."
Their goal is to raise £500, which would provide more than 3,000 meals for those in need.
In three days, they've already managed to raise just under a third of their target, with £165 coming in from donations since Friday, January 15.
