TODAY, Ealing Council is joining the national day of reflection, to recognise the lives lost to COVID-19.
Since the first lockdown began last March, more than 126,000 people have died across the UK.
Today (March 23) is the first anniversary of the first UK lockdown and Ealing Council is joining the Marie Curie's National Day of Reflection to reflect on our collective loss, support those who've been bereaved and hope for a brighter future.
To mark the day, Ealing Council will be joining the nation by holding a minute's silence at noon.
Residents are encouraged to show their support and shine a light or a candle at 8pm tonight as well.
Mayor of Ealing, Cllr Dr Adbullah Gulaid, led the tributes and said: "Since the first lockdown began in 2020, hundreds of thousands of people have died.
"Too many lives have been cut short, millions have been bereaved or are living with the ongoing impact of COVID.
"Behind the statistics and whatever the cause, every death has been devastating for the people left behind.
"Many have been unable to properly say goodbye to their loved ones, comfort or hug each other.
"As a nation we need to acknowledge the millions in silent pain.
"Let us come together to reflect on our collective loss, support those who have been bereaved and hope for a brighter future.
"There are still tough times ahead as the death toll continues to rise.
"But there is light at the end of this dark period.
"I urge everyone to take their vaccine when offered and this would be soon, hopefully.
"In the meantime, continue to follow the hands, face and space guidance in order to support our NHS.
"Both these measures have made a real difference and prevent further deaths.
"So, whatever your background, whatever your beliefs and whatever you have been through, please join us for the first National Day of Reflection.
"This day will give us all time to pause and think about the unprecedented loss we have been facing and support each other through grief in the years ahead."
