Ealing pays tribute to the passing of Millennium Mayor Phil Portwood

The funeral for the former Mayor of Ealing and East Acton councillor was held yesterday (12 December), after his passing on 17 November this year.

Philip Portwood served as East Acton cllr for over 20 years and was Ealing's Millennium Mayor from 1999-2000 alongside his mother Joan as the Millennium Mayoress, who past away in 2013.

He grew up and lived in East Acton all of his life, serving the Labour Party and Cooperative Party during his time as cllr.

In his X bio he quoted his grandad, William Portwood, writing: "East Acton is God's own country."

Adding: "Never moved from East Acton - never will."

Mr Portwood was also very active for Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) where he was part of its West Middlesex branch.

The current Mayor of Ealing, Cllr Hitesh Tailor, said on X: "Today (12 December), we paid our respects to East Acton's very own Phil Portwood, former Councillor and Past Mayor, aka the Millennium Mayor.

"Phil was a loyal member of the Labour Party, Cooperative Party and served 22 years as an Ealing councillor. And was also an active member of CAMRA."

Cllr for North Acton, Dan Crawford, also paid tribute to Mr Portwood, calling him an East Acton "legend" and "proud pupil and governor of John Perryn Primary School".

Cllr for Northolt Mandeville, Miriam Rice, has previously paid tribute saying: "All of us at the Ealing Co-op Party are incredibly saddened by the passing of our secretary Phil Portwood.

"A highly respected mayor, organiser and agent, and much missed by our party across London. Phil made many of us who we are today and thoughts are with his many loved ones."

The funeral took place on 12 December at Mortlake Crematorium, Townmead Road.

Mr Portwood's family have requested no flowers but appreciate donations in his memory to the Alzheimer's Society.
