Northolt Library remains shut due to a bed bug infestation on Saturday, 9 December which came from books returned to library.

The closure of Northolt Library makes it the second Ealing library to close because of an outbreak in the space of three months, after Ealing Central Library suffered from an infestation back in October.

It appears that Northolt Library staff were able to identify the bed bugs early as only a "small" amount were spotted in the site.

An Ealing Council spokesperson said: "Unfortunately, a small number of bed bugs were found in returned books on Saturday at Northolt Library.

"Northolt library staff responded promptly and professionally in dealing with this matter. The library is currently closed, as we finalise arrangements to treat the bugs with our pest control contractor.

The council spokesperson added: "Bed bugs have been an issue in the UK for many years and are notoriously difficult to prevent in well used amenities such as public transport and public buildings.

"Regular inspections and vigilance are advised to spot bugs early and treat them, which is exactly what has happened in Northolt Library."

This outbreak contrasts what occurred at Ealing Central Library between 30 October and 6 November, where the pest controllers had to deal with bed bugs found within the library's furniture.

Northolt Library continues to be closed until further notice.

Residents can use nearby library Southall Library, UB2 4BQ, which is around 25 minutes away on bus from Northolt Library.

Southall Library is open on Monday, Friday and Saturday from 10am to 5pm; Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10am to 7pm; Sundays from 1-4pm.
