Open letter from Leading Ealing Lib Dems to Ealing Council Leader on ULEZ

Earlier today Council Leader Peter Mason changed his stance on the ULEZ scrappage scheme by following the London Liberal Democrat policy to ask the London Labour Mayor to extend it.

The scrappage scheme extension to every London vehicle has long been a Liberal Democrat policy advocated by London Assembly Members Caroline Pidgeon and Hina Bokhari. Back in February, the Liberal Democrats successfully got the ULEZ scrappage extension motion passed in the London Assembly yet was voted down by Labour and then vetoed by the London Labour Mayor.

Liberal Democrats have long been strong advocates of environmentally friendly travel, from 'Lynne Featherstone' rental cycles, greater cycle training, storage, and other cycling provisions, to campaigns against bus cuts, while balancing the practical needs and concerns of local residents.

Following your public letter today, the Liberal Democrat Opposition Group and London Assembly members are looking forward to working with both of you and Ealing Labour to convince the London Labour Mayor that extending the scrappage scheme is the right thing to do.

Councillor Gary Malcolm, Leader of the Opposition, said: "Liberal Democrats are glad that Ealing Labour back tracked and have joined the Lib Dems across London campaigning for a proper scrappage scheme. We await to see whether the Mayor of London listens to this growing opposition to the current unfair scrappage scheme."
