A members only cricket and social club in West London will now serve alcohol to non-members until midnight Monday to Saturday.

The club was also granted permission to play live music until 11:30pm by Ealing Council.

The Ealing Cricket and Social Club on Corfton Road has operated on a members only basis for 150 years.

However, since growing in popularity, the club, situated in a residential area has sought to expand their activities.

Prior to their new licence, the club sold alcohol until 11pm Monday to Saturday, and until 10:30pm on Sundays to members and guests of the club.

The application sought to allow sale of alcohol for off-site drinking, however the Ealing Council Licensing Sub-committee decided against this proposal.

The application received 20 objections in total, including a joint objection by ward councillors Jonathan Oxley and Athena Zissimoss.

Concerns were raised about the potential for crime and disorder and public nuisance.

Councillor Oxley told the committee he did not believe there was a pressing need for extended hours, particularly because the club is in a residential area.

He also raised concerns for women in the area late at night.

He added: "It is not a mix like normal social clubs. When you have teams there, they're men's teams.

"We're talking about these players staying after matches with their friends and staff with loud music in a very male environment.

"People with work or school in the morning do not need to be disturbed."

Marina Kalkanis, a nearby resident, said she has witnessed on several occasions poor behaviour from those that had been drinking in the club.

She said: "I've seen alcohol related aggression outside leaving the club.

"If the restriction is removed it is much more difficult to regulate behaviour and opens more areas of concern for the neighbourhood."

Vice President of the cricket club Greg Fitzpatrick said that it was unlikely there would be drinking until midnight every night.

"He also reminded the committee there has never been any problems with local police.

He added: "Public safety will not be in any way compromised in any way as a result of this application… local residents will be treated with respect at all times."
