Ealing Council have launched a survey to give the community a say on where the planned new bike hangars will be placed.

The council announced last week that they would be holding a public consultation over the 150 bike hangars as part of their £10 million investment in active travel.

There are currently 48 bike hangars in Ealing, providing space for the storage of 288 bicycles, and Ealing Council plans to have 150 by 2026.

The vote allows people to view an interactive map with the current locations of the bike hangars and suggest locations which would be useful for them to have another one, where there currently is not one.

Councillor Deidre Costigan, cabinet member for climate action, said in a statement: "Our hangars are a brilliant and cost-effective way to safely store a bike near your home.

"We want to expand the number of these hangars across our seven towns to support the rapidly growing number of cyclists in the borough.

"50 hangars will be installed in the next year, and this is just the beginning. We want to take this to a total of at least 150 by 2026 – an ambitious target, but one that our residents deserve.

"And we need your help to do this. That is why we have launched a consultation so local people can tell us exactly where these new hangars would be useful to those who need them most.

"We have already got a lot of data that can help us identify the best places to put bike hangars, but we also want to hear from you, as you know your area best."

The decisions will be made based on: volume of requests from residents in a certain area, number of bike thefts in the area; wider community support from residents; distribution of bike hangars across the borough; and ability to park your bike near home where access to a garage or back garden shed for bike storage is limited.

Once locations are decided, residents will be able to apply for a space so that they will be able to use the hangar to store their bike.

There was some criticism on social media from residents over the decision to consult the public, relating largely to the fact that it slows down the process.

The survey is open until 6th January 2023, and you can have your say here.
