LONDONERS have been asked to do their bit to stop the Capital being moved into stricter Tier 3 restrictions as cases of coronavirus across the city are on the rise.

Official figures show that Ealing had 584 new cases in the week of November 23-29, down 109 from the week before.

But other parts of London are seeing cases rise, sparking fears that when areas are reviewed on December 16, the whole city could be put into Tier 3 restrictions which would prove devastating for local pubs, bars and restaurants.

Pleading to Londoners to help keep the Capital in Tier 2, Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said: "The number of cases in London are rising again and if we don't all work together now, we may face tougher restrictions across the Capital.

"Londoners have worked incredibly hard to help bring down the number of cases before, but we must not risk undoing all the sacrifices that have been made by lowering our guard and allowing cases to rise further ahead of Christmas."

Health Secretary Matt Hancock and London minister Paul Scully are also appealing to people to follow the rules.

They are concerned that complacency has set in now a vaccine is being rolled out.

It is also feared people may drop their guard as Christmas approaches.

Experts have warned that London needs to move into Tier 3 before it's too late.

One of these is Professor John Ashton, author of Blinded by Corona, who told the BBC: "If London doesn't want hospitals to be full over Christmas the government need to get a grip today".

"Deaths will start going up during the Christmas period and New Year unless something is done," said the former regional director of public health for North-West England.

"London could become a super spreader, sending coronavirus to other parts of the country over Christmas and making a third wave of infections likely in January.

"London always gets treated differently from the rest of the country because that is where parliament is and where a lot of the business community is."
