CLAP for Carers is set to return under the new name of Clap for Heroes tonight in Ealing and around the country.

Founder Annemarie Plas tweeted that it would return at 8pm tonight.

Plas's tweet read: "I hope it can lift the spirit, of all of us.

"Carers teachers, home-schooling parents, those who shield and ALL who are pushing through this difficult time!"

The idea originally started in March, a few days after the first lockdown was announced on March 23 and after proving very popular, continued on for 10 weeks.

However, the event later faced criticism for becoming politicised, with some people suggesting that NHS workers would benefit from pay rises instead.

The same criticisms are prevalent now as well, with many local residents stating that they won't be taking part.

Jan Harumi wrote on Facebook: "I'd rather they got a pay rise."

This sentiment is shared by Toni Chelsea who added: "This clapping is so silly. Those people need a pay rise, not clapping. They don't pay with clapping in the shops."

Some even mentioned that their friends and family who work for the NHS don't actually like the applause.

Victoria Williams wrote: "My friend is a hospital consultant and finds the clapping extremely patronising. She's a professional doing her job, not a part-time cricketer walking to the crease."

Anne Nadel agreed: "My husband works in ITU and he'd prefer that people followed the rules. Clapping doesn't help him or the packed-out ICUs."

This was one of the reasons that Plas decided to end the clap after its tenth week last year.

"Without getting too political, I share some of the opinions that some people have about it becoming politicised," she told the PA news agency ahead of the final clap in May.
