John Lewis Partnership have unveiled their new plans for Waitrose West Ealing as residents concern over the height of the development.

The new Waitrose in West Ealing is planned to be a multi-purpose development as they build high-quality housing as well as a new, improved Waitrose store.

The development proposal is a redeveloped store of a similar size to the existing one, a new 170-space car park, 430 build-to-rent homes, a new public piazza, Mews style homes, and development to Alexandria Road shops.

During the development a temporary Waitrose store would continue to operate as the new one is being built, so people can continue to shop there.

The proposed plans involve a 19-storey apartment block, and this is where the controversy lies as local campaigners Stop The Towers (STT) have objected to the height of the development.

The campaigners, along with MP for Ealing North, James Murray, met with John Lewis Waitrose on 22nd February and they were dismayed that the development exceeded the Draft Local Plan guidance on between nine and 13 storeys, especially as it would tower over the existing buildings in the area, which are a maximum of ten storeys.

Justine Sullivan of STT, who attended the meeting commented, "Why has Ealing Council been talking with John Lewis about these plans since 2021, but not insisted John Lewis stick to Ealing's own draft local plan?

"Now is the time for Peter Mason (Leader of Ealing Council) to stick to his election promises and 'clamp down on tall towers'.

"Surely, he's not going to sit there and do nothing and let developers tell him his plan has no weight."
