A CAMPAIGN has been launched to turn an unused site in Hanwell into a community garden.

Ealing Borough has given Cultivate London – a social enterprise and charity which has been running and managing community gardens in West London – access to the unused site near Billets Hart Allotments in order to set up DIG Hanwell Community Hub.

This is a dedicated hub to be used by residents and groups, providing a full calendar of events encouraging community interaction, social inclusion, a sense of civic pride and a growing knowledge in a greener cleaner local area.

The garden will also grow food for the community, with the food shared between participants and any surplus will be offered to food banks.

The project which launched last month has been approved by the Mayor's 'Make London' funding programme, which helps support recovery following the pandemic.

The deadline for the fundraiser is May 11 and the initial aim will be to raise £33,000.

So far, more than £21,000 have been raised, accounting for 64% of the total goal, with a big sum of that money coming from an £18,000 Mayor of London pledge.

The Deputy Mayor for Planning, Regeneration and Skills, Jules Pipe, said: "The Mayor and I believe our communities have some fantastic ideas on how to emerge from the pandemic and bring our city together.

"We're proud to support this project and look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on the local community."
