Meet the eight-year-old who grew plants in Ealing's LTN planters

AN eight-year-old boy from Hanwell had been growing plants and flowers on some of the planters found throughout LTN21 (until they were removed this weekend).

The Low Traffic Neighbourhood (LTN) scheme has caused much divide throughout the borough, with the use of planters implemented to block off certain routes to drivers.

Young Felix Klimowski however had taken it upon himself to at least 'make them look pretty' for as long as they were here.

Felix, who goes to school at Mount Carmel, has been working towards his environmental badge with the Polish cubs and since March that has included growing plants.

The cubs have been learning about the importance of growing plants to help the bees and were given bee-friendly seeds to use.

His father told Nub News: "People have their own beliefs whether for or against LTNs, but making the planters look nice is surely a good thing for everybody.

"And that's what Felix wanted to do, he wanted to make them look pretty and help the bees in the process too - he's a Brentford fan so he loves bees and has learnt about their importance to the environment through the cubs."

The first seeds were planted two months ago and recently started producing results.

The cubs also gave each boy signs in order to notify people that something was already growing in that spot, in case they wanted to plant something too.

During the past year and three lockdowns, the importance of green spaces has really been highlighted, as people have been stuck indoors.

And Felix's father believes that even something as small as planting a couple of flowers in planters can help brighten up an urban environment and help those that maybe don't have their own garden.

"It got a really good reaction from the local residents, they would often come up to Felix and compliment him on the job he did, it made him very happy.

"For Felix it was just such an overall positive experience," he added.

Other people also started growing plants in planters throughout (the now removed) LTN21 and there was even a group of residents who helped maintain them all.

You could find Felix's plants on the planters between Leighton Road and Burns Road and on the ones between Northcroft Road and Mayfield Avenue prior to their recent removal.
