River Brent walk

Join CPRE London and the Brent River & Canal Society (BRCS) for an enjoyable and educational Summer stroll along the Brent River. Learn more about the river's recent history, including vital river restoration and rewilding in the Ealing area.

The BRCS and local community groups are seeking to create important new wetland habitats, to plant native aquatic plants, and to help the river meander more naturally in its channel. Spend time with like-minded nature lovers, discover more about these exciting projects and find out how you can get involved. And also, simply spend time with us enjoying all the wonderful wildlife the Brent River supports! Dragonfly spotting, shy moor hens, coots with their amazing big blue feet, maybe the blue flash of a kingfisher if we are lucky on the day!

The walk will start by the entrance of Gurnell Leisure Centre, Ruislip Rd E, Ealing, London, W13 0AL at 6pm and will follow the Brent River to Warren Farm Nature Reserve, followed by an exploration of the nature reserve. The walk from the Leisure Centre to Warren Farm Nature reserve will be approximately 3.5 miles.

If you would like to just join us for the Warren Farm Nature Reserve portion of the walk, you can meet us outside The Fox Inn, Hanwell, London W7 2PJ at 8pm, this walk will finish at 9pm.

Warren Farm Nature Reserve is one of the green spaces in CPRE London's 'Ten New Parks' campaign as featured on BBC London News. A rewilded urban wildflower meadow, Warren Farm NR is home to an abundance of wildlife, some of which are facing extinction in London and the UK.

The wildlife is astounding! Skylarks, barn owls, little owls, linnets, migrating wheatears and even a wryneck have been recorded. Water birds from swans, mallards, herons, Egyptian geese and many more. Hundreds of astonishing insects from, yarrow pugs, dragonflies and marbled white butterflies to the Thanatus striatus spider, a first record for Middlesex! Mammals from bats to hedgehogs. Amphibians including common toads and smooth newts. Reptiles such as the beautiful harmless slow-worm. Their presence all clearly demonstrating the importance of having connected green and blue spaces.

The Warren Farm Nature Reserve group is seeking official Local Nature Reserve (LNR) designation for Warren Farm NR and the surrounding Brent River Park meadows. Earlier this year, Ealing Council agreed to four out of the seven meadows in the Vision to receive LNR status, which is fantastic news! That now leaves three meadows left to go – including Warren Farm! With a petition of over 12,000 signatures (and counting!) that has been delivered to the Mayor of London, please do come along to find out more about the Warren Farm Nature Reserve wildlife and campaign, that when fully realised, will make it one of the largest rewilding projects seen in London in decades. And of course, the walk will end where it began, at The Fox Pub 9pm!

The terrain for both walks combined will be relatively flat. We advise that you wear comfortable footwear and clothes suitable for the weather, and even though we will be surrounded by water, please bring plenty of water to drink! Please be aware that this is not a circular walk, our destination will be different from our starting point. The nearest train station near The Fox Inn is Hanwell on the Elizabeth line.

We plan to hold the walks whatever the weather, although will advise participants with plenty of notice should the walk need to be cancelled for any reason. We look forward to walking with you!
