Review: 'Three Uncles Ealing is easily the best Cantonese food in the area'
When reports that one of my favourite London restaurants was coming to Ealing and it would be its biggest branch, I was shocked.
Cantonese restaurant chain, Three Uncles, serve one of, if not, the best Char Siu (BBQ Pork) Rice in the capital and a range of other delicious Hong Kong dishes.
Born out of childhood friends, Pui Sing, Cheong Yew & Mo, the three wanted to bring back treasured memories of growing up in Hong Kong during the 70s, so they opened Three Uncles with its first branch in Liverpool Street back in 2019.
Since then, Three Uncles has expanded to five locations across London with its most recent Ealing Broadway site being its largest one.
To mark its importance, the Cantonese restaurant released an exclusive menu for Ealing residents inspired by Hong Kong's 18-districts.
Three Uncles 18-Districts Menu
Starters:
- Banquet Prawn Toast - Deep-fried minced prawn on toast, with black and white sesame seeds, served with its sweet and sour sauce (£5).
- Shek Wu Hui Chee Cheong Fun - Steamed rice noodle rolls with sesame paste, hoisin sauce, homemade chilli sauce and sesame seeds (£8.95).
Mains:
- HK Curry Brisket with Rice - Braised beef brisket, potato and carrot with a mild Cantonese-style curry sauce and jasmine rice (£13).
- House-Salted Duck Egg (half egg) - A salty condiment to be eaten alongside your meal (£2.5).
Desserts:
- Deep Fried Custard Bun - Deep-fried sweet bao filled with salted egg and creamy custard (£5.25).
- Mango Pudding - Chilled mango pudding topped with fresh mango purée, cream and juicy mango chunks (£5).
Having tried almost all of the new menu, aside from the House-Salted Duck Egg, my favourite dish from the bunch was easily the HK Curry Brisket with Rice.
The plate came served with a generous portion of tender pieces of beef brisket with potatoes and fluffy rice, all drenched in a yummy curry sauce.
What I also loved was the curry had a slight spiciness and subtle sweetness, adding extra notes in flavour.
With the HK Curry Brisket with Rice dish you get quality and quantity.
Now onto the Shek Wu Hui Chee Cheong Fun, this bright starter looks as good as it taste.
The combination of flavours from the hoisin, chilli and sesame sauce, create an explosion of flavour which the steamed rice noodle rolls absorb fantastically well.
Next, the Banquet Prawn Toast was the simplest dish on the menu, but far from the least flavourful.
The three, deep-fried minced prawns, give a balance of crispiness and softness, which mixed with the sweet and sour sauce is a great treat for seafood lovers.
Despite being full after going through the prawns, beef curry and noodles, I still had room for the new desserts.
The two golden Custard Buns were warm treats, perfect for the cold weather.
Once you get past the crispy exterior you have the sweet egg custard waiting for you in the middle.
However, my favourite from the two dessert options was the Mango Pudding. It felt as if I was drinking a Mango Lassi.
The Mango Pudding had a rich and sweet flavour with a texture that just perfectly melts in your mouth. If you are a mango fan then you will love this dish and if you are not, you will still love this dish.
It is that good!
Overall, the exclusive 18-District menu from Three Uncles is a welcome addition to the already popular dishes on the menu. I definitely see myself ordering the HK curry again, especially in this winter period, but I will stick with the familiar favourite, the Char Siu Rice.
