Ealing Nub News aims to support our community, promoting shops, businesses, charities, clubs and sports groups.
We will be profiling some of these businesses and organisations regularly in a feature called 'UP CLOSE in Ealing.'
Today we caught up with Robi Amerini, the Ealing co-founder and co-owner of Kanenas Coffee London.
Robi Amerini and her husband Panos Patrinos have lived in Ealing for the past three years.
Amerini is originally from Italy and Patrinos from Greece, but they both moved to London a decade ago.
Amerini has worked in hospitality since she was a teenager and has always been interested in the industry.
A year ago the pair decided to open their own coffee shop and Kanenas was born in October 2019.
Located on The Grove in the heart of Ealing, Kanenas is in a prime location to serve the community.
Amerini told Nub News: "We always wanted to have our own place.
"We didn't just want it to be a place people come to buy coffee, we wanted people to be able to sit and chat, similar to a Greek style coffee shop."
Kanenas means no one in Greek and the name is taken from the Odyssey, when Odysseus tricked the Cyclops and told him his name was Kanenas (no one).
"The themes of the Odyssey resonate with us because we're immigrants.
"Odysseus spent 10 years out at sea trying to get home; we're not longing to go home in the same way, but we're nostalgic of our childhood memories and the things that remind us of home," added Amerini.
Kanenas is not a Greek coffee shop per se, but it's Greek inspired, according to Amerini.
They offer fusion food, such as eggs with a Greek twist, instead of your classic Eggs Benedict, said the Italian.
"We're a different kind of brunch place, I don't think there's anything similar around."
During the first lockdown the coffee shop closed down, but during the second one they decided to stay open as they knew it would be shorter.
Amerini added: "We introduced more takeaway options to make it easier for people to shop with us.
"Panos made some of his famous sourdough bread which we also shared with the community.
"We only live five minutes away, Ealing is our home and we feel like our coffee shop is an integral part of the community here."
