Award winning comedy Single Spies opens at The Questors Theatre
The Questors Theatre welcomes Alan Bennett's Olivier Award winning comedy, Single Spies, from 22 to 30 March 2024.
Single Spies is a compelling combination of two award-winning one-act plays; An Englishman Abroad and A Question of Attribution - playing for the first time since 2007.
Both plays were inspired by the real lives of The Cambridge five spy ring during which five Cambridge University students between the 30s and 50s were passing information to the Soviet Union during WWII and the Cold War.
An Englishman Abroad which is based on a real life event, follows the chance encounter between actress Coral Browne and the infamous British traitor Guy Burgess in Moscow.
A Question of Attribution delves into the mysterious world of art authentication and, in an imagined, unexpected encounter, sees Anthony Blunt, a renowned art historian, and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II engage in an elliptical interrogation, as conversation about art turns into something even more intriguing.
Artistic Director Alex Marker said: "Alan Bennett's adeptness at blending humour with thought-provoking themes means his plays will always have a space on the British stage.
"It's a personal pleasure to have him back on ours after almost 20 years with these two Olivier Award-winning comedies.
"I am excited about the moment of Sir Anthony Blunt pondering hidden figures in Buckingham Palace's paintings, with the Queen as an unwitting accomplice, it's quintessentially British - where the art holds secrets tighter than a cup of Earl Grey!"
