Six months of Ealing Nub News: About your editor

By Dimitris Kouimtsidis 26th Aug 2021

TODAY, May 16, marks six months since Ealing Nub News was launched, so we thought it's about time you get a little peak behind the curtain.

I first moved to Ealing at the age of seven, having been born and raised in Islington.

I went to primary school in Acton, at the Greek Primary School of London – a normal, every-day school that follows the Greek curriculum instead of the British one.

My parents wanted to make sure I learnt the Greek language and culture, something which I did.

I eventually moved to St Benedict's in Ealing Broadway for secondary school, where I did my GCSEs and A Levels, before heading off to University in Leeds to study History.

Getting into Journalism

During my time 'up north', I realised that what I truly wanted to do was to be a journalist, so when I completed my degree, I moved back home and worked in what I considered to be a 'boring office job' for a year, while saving some money and applying to do a Master's in Journalism.

I moved 'up north' again, this time to the East Midlands and Lincoln, where I studied for my MA in Journalism with a specialisation in Sports.

During my MA I also completed a couple of internships, first at Lincolnshire Live, a local news site based in Lincoln and then at London Live, a television channel that solely reports on London news.

After completing my studies in September 2019, I worked part-time for Hellenic TV, a Greek television channel in London, where I presented a weekly sports show.

At the same time, I completed an internship with the World Curling Federation as a trainee journalist at the European Curling Championships in Sweden.

Just to let you in on a little secret: I didn't know anything about curling before I got my internship, I picked it all up as I went along.

And then finally, in December 2019, I got my big break and was offered my first full-time job as a journalist, starting in January 2020.

The only problem was that it was in Spain!

And by Spain I don't mean a busy city like Madrid and Barcelona, or even Valencia and Seville, but instead I would be based on the Costa del Sol, where life is very, very different from that in London.

I ended up accepting and at the start of last year I moved to Estepona, without any knowledge of Spanish and I started working at the Olive Press – an English-speaking newspaper.

During my time at the Olive Press I learnt so many things about being a journalist and even got a byline in the UK nationals three times – in the Daily Mail, the Sun and the Daily Mirror.

But unfortunately, due to the pandemic, I had to move back to London in August and started looking for jobs here.

Working at Nub News

In September I met our CEO, Karl Hancock, for an interview and over the next two months I wrote a few stories for our other West London sites as a trial – namely Teddington, Richmond and Brentford.

Karl must've liked what he saw and I managed to persuade him that Nub News needed to come to the 'Queen of the Suburbs' and on November 16, Ealing Nub News was born.

Although I've lived in the Borough of Ealing on and off for the past 18 years, this job keeps teaching me more and more about our beautiful area.

I really enjoy reporting on the area I grew up in and the fact that I still live locally (currently based in Acton) means that I can conduct 'on the ground reporting'.

This is something Nub News prides itself on; we're all local to our areas (in all 67 of our sites around the country), we're not based in some office in central London where reporters just write up articles based off press releases.

Instead, we know our areas inside and out and as residents, we want to do the best we can to bring hyperlocal news to your doorstep.

So I'd like to say thank you to you, my fellow Ealing residents for taking Nub News to your hearts and for allowing me to report on my 'home', something which a lot of journalists don't get to do in our day and age.

Here's to the next six months and many years to come.
