Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, visited Al Manaar Mosque in west London on Wednesday, 14 August in a show of solidarity against racism, Islamophobia and antisemitism.

Khan hosted a roundtable with members of the community in addition to officials from the Met police and Home Office to announce additional support for security training at mosques in the capital.

"London will always be proud of our diversity, and we will continue to do all we can to show that our city will never tolerate violence, racism, Islamophobia and antisemitism, as we build a safer London for all," Khan said.

The visit came at the backdrop of scenes of violence and disorder across the country earlier this month.

A member of the community said: "There is concern within our Muslim communities, in particular women wearing the Muslim scarf, going for shopping or going about for normal day-to-say business."

Commander Elizabeth Chapple from the Met police addressed the community and said: "You are very important to us, and I would always want you to feel like that.

"It makes me feel very sad that you don't feel safe all the time, so I hope one of the things you'll leave this meeting with today is that increased feeling of safety for yourself and your family."

Khan has announced £10,000 for Faith Associates, experts in mosque security, to conduct four sessions covering security training at the mosque.

Shaukat Warraich, managing director at Faith Associates, said: "We have a long history of working with the mayor on helping to keep the Muslim community in the capital safe.

"The new support provided to us by MOPAC will allow even more Mosques to receive vital safety and security advice which can be implemented immediately."

Khan said that though the peaceful show of unity in the capital last week was inspiring, there was "no room for complacency. We can never stop being vigilant".
