According to jobs website Indeed, the average delivery driver salary in the UK is £12.38/hour and since the increase in e-commerce activity following the pandemic positions have been in demand.
Solutions like route optimisation software and driver telematics can make the life of a delivery driver easier, but there are a number of challenges that the profession is exposed to including extreme weather conditions, time pressures and traffic issues says Descartes, a delivery route planning company.
The company has put together a dataset which explores which borough in London has the highest average delivery driver salary and if this will potentially be improved by the rise in the minimum wage in April.
Descartes say London delivery drivers face challenges such as congestion charge, heavy pedestrian traffic and limited parking opportunities.
Data ranking average delivery driver salaries across all 32 London boroughs.
Of the 28 reported salaries on Indeed within the borough, there is an average salary of £36,905 in Ealing.
This places Ealing within the middle of the pack at 16th when it comes to the average earnings vs some of the other boroughs in London.
Neighbours Hounslow ranked higher in ninth than Ealing with an average salary of £39,421 from 64 reported salaries.
Some of the highest reported salaries included boroughs like Kingston upon Thames with 54, but also some with fewer submissions like Merton which had four reported salaries.
In terms of the London boroughs with the lowest average salary these include some areas with few reported salaries (Richmond upon Thames reported three), but areas like Harrow and Croydon had 66 and 183 reported salaries respectively.
Andrew Tavener, Descartes Head of Fleet Marketing EMEA told Nub News: "Looking at driver salaries it is interesting to see how Ealing compares to the rest of the capital.
"With the many challenges of being a delivery driver in London, they earn every penny. Software like Descartes' will make drivers' lives easier and safer.
