Figures released yesterday (26 November) reveal that within the last eight years the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has funded the planting of 52,697 trees in Ealing and 6,012 in Hillingdon, nearly 33,713 more than under the previous mayor.

City Hall say the greening of the capital's streets is vital for the health and wellbeing of Londoners as it will keep London cool as the UK faces higher temperatures and more extreme weather conditions due to the climate emergency.

As it is National Tree Planting Week, the figures released yesterday are thanks to a £30 million investment in green spaces and tree planting which has been pioneered by the Mayor's Environment Strategy and London Plan.

Both aim to prevent nature depletion and increase biodiversity and green space across the city.

The Mayor has also invested in more than 350 community projects, ensuring that local communities are involved in the design and ownership of their green spaces.

London Assembly Member Bassam Mahfouz AM visited The Closes with Councillor Jan Sweeting, Cllr Mohammed Islam and Cllr Scott Farley from the London Borough of Hillingdon where they planted several tree's provided by Trees for Cities.

Bassam Mahfouz AM, London Assembly Member for Ealing and Hillingdon said: "I would like to thank Trees for Cities for hosting this fantastic event and to all those who have volunteered to plant the trees.

"The planting of over 4,000 trees at The Closes in West Drayton will almost double the number of new trees planted in Hillingdon, compared to the last eight years.

"Trees are such an important part of creating healthy spaces, improving our air quality and providing shade; it's a fantastic achievement to plant so many trees here in the heart of Hillingdon."
