The Prime Minister faces a confidence vote in his leadership today after the threshold of Conservative MPs required to trigger the process was reached.

A ballot will be held between 6pm and 8pm tonight (Monday, June 6) with the result announced around an hour after the vote closes.

In a statement Sir Graham Brady, chairman of the Conservative backbench 1922 Committee, revealed at least 54 MPs – amounting to 15 per cent of the parliamentary party – had lost faith in Johnson's leadership.

The Tory rebels technically need 180 votes in order to remove Johnson from office, with another ballot prevented for a period of a year.

However the tenure of his position is likely to need a convincing win. Theresa May, his predecessor, won her vote of confidence with the support of 63 per cent of Tory MPs but was out of power within seven months.
