A HOUSE fire in Acton caused the emergency services to close down the A40 going into Central London yesterday, February 17.

Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters were called to a house fire on Western Avenue at around 8am.

Fire crews from Acton, Park Royal, Wembley and surrounding fire stations attended the scene, and the inferno was under control by 10am.

The roof of a mid-terrace house was destroyed and most of the first floor and half of the ground floor were damaged by the fire.

Part of the loft conversion of an adjacent property was also damaged by the blaze.

There were no reports of any injuries and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Station Commander Lucy Macleod-Cook, who was at the scene, said: "Firefighters worked quickly to bring the fire, which was located in the loft space of a house, under control.

"Crews are expected to remain on scene for a number of hours damping down.

"The A40 is closed going into London from the A406 at Hanger Lane.

"We urge people to avoid the area and use an alternative route.

"Local people were advised to close their windows and doors due to smoke in the area."
