Greenford-man sentenced to seven and a half years in prison for causing death by dangerous driving
A man from Greenford has been sentenced to seven and a half in prison after being convicted of causing the death of a woman by dangerous driving.
Rida Kazem, 24, of Costons Avenue, Greenford was jailed for seven and a half years and banned from driving for 12 years at a sentencing at Isleworth Crown Court on Wednesday 17th May having previously pleaded guilty.
Kazem was involved in a fatal collision on the westbound A40 near to Park Royal Underground Station at 3.48am on 22nd August 2022 which caused the death of a 33-year-old woman.
Kazem was driving with two women in the back of a Range Rover and after going onto the A40 accelerated to approximately 110 mph, almost twice the speed limit, and underestimated a slight bend which caused the vehicle to collide with the kerb.
The high-speed impact meant that one of the back wheels came away and the car spun towards a Tesla car park and smashed into a stationary Tesla with a 50-year-old man sat in it, Kazem's car then flipped over a wall and came to a stop on the railway tracks of Park Royal Tube Station.
Emergency services attended the scene, but Yagmur Ozden, 33, died at the scene despite their best efforts, the second passenger, a woman in her 20s, and the driver of the Tesla have since made full recoveries.
Kazem was taken to hospital with what were initially thought to be critical injuries, but has since made a recovery, he also declined to give a blood sample despite the request from police.
Kazem had two previous speeding offences and had been disqualified from driving after travelling 95 mph in a 50 mph zone, but this ban ended in July 2022.
The Serious Collision Investigation Unit analysed CCTV footage and took witness statements, which led to Kazem being interviewed in October 2022 and he was subsequently charged.
Detective Constable Benjamin Simpson, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "Our thoughts remain with Yagmur's family and friends who have experienced the most tragic loss.
"CCTV footage recovered from the local area clearly shows Kazem travelling at excessive speed, and losing control of his car.
"His guilty plea was an acknowledgement that he should have known better, but this does not mitigate what he did.
"The driving he displayed in this incident was both deliberate and selfish with no regard for the public and has ultimately resulted in life changing injuries and the loss of Yagmur's life.
"I fully understand the family's frustration with the length of sentence handed down today. I hope that other motorists will reflect on this case and recognise that what they do behind the wheel can have tragic consequences."
