Empty shelves as Wilko stores close tomorrow

By Cesar Medina 11th Sep 2023

Acton's Wilko is among the 24 stores closing tomorrow (Tuesday, 12 September).

Shelves at the Acton branch continue to empty as remaining customers buy products at massive reductions from the 90-year-old brand.

This comes as administrators at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) confirmed this week that all 400 Wilko stores will be closed by October.

Yesterday a rescue deal with music retailer, HMV, fell through which would have saved around 200 stores and 12,000 employees.

Last week, the discount store, B&M, secured a £13 million deal to buy 51 stores, but it did not encompass the retention of staff jobs. The stores will not reopen under the Wilko name.

Administrators are actively engaged in discussions with Poundland concerning approximately 100 stores.

However, any potential agreement reached with Poundland would come into effect after the closure of Wilko stores and would not entail the transfer of existing staff.

Employees at the Acton store refused to speak to Nub News for legal reasons, but it is understood that all staff will be made redundant.

GMB Union have informed Wilko employees that PwC could not find buyers and that the company could not be rescued.

The GMB union statement said: "There is now no prospect of saving the remaining store estate in its entirety and all Wilko stores will close by early October with DCs to close on Friday, 15th September."

It added: "We share the sorrow and anger of every Wilko team member today.

"You deserved so much more than this and we will continue to work so you are treated with the respect you deserve during the remaining days wind down and we will not stop working to ensure those responsible for this debacle are held to account in the future."

GMB union tell colleagues that despite it stopping being a family brand over the years, Wilko was more than a store.

The statement said: "Wilko was far more than a brand, a retailer or the products, it was the thousands of loyal team members now facing an uncertain future.

"It may have ceased genuinely being a family brand many years ago, but you, the staff kept the real family ethos of Wilko alive until the very end.

"We know it is the family you have made for yourselves that will be so sorely missed."
