Gunnersbury Park bid a treasured tree by the Orangery a fond farewell today (Tuesday, February 15).

The old beech tree has been slowly dying and is now posing a safety risk to visitors.

A new beech tree has been planted nearby for future generations to enjoy. The wood of its predecessor will stay in the park, providing a new habitat for the varied wildlife found in Gunnersbury Park.

A spokesperson for Gunnersbury Park said: "A sad day for us as we say goodbye to our old beech tree by the Orangery.

"It has been slowly dying and it is now time for it to be cut down for the safety of our visitors.

"Not all bad news though - the wood will stay in the park as a new and valued habitat for our wildlife. Plus new life is already there - a beech tree has been planted in that area, so future generations can enjoy the view and the shade it will offer.
