Ealing: traffic chaos as climate activists block Hanger Lane

By Hannah Davenport 4th Oct 2021

Climate activists blocked three major routes around London this morning including Hanger Lane in north Ealing, causing major traffic disruption.

54 people from Insulate Britain blocked three major routes at the Blackwall Tunnel (North and South side), Hanger Lane and Wandsworth Bridge this morning, Monday 4 October.

This is the eleventh time Insulate Britain has caused disruption on motorways and A roads over the past three weeks, as their campaign to demand government action on home insulation enters its fourth week.

Motorists were seen getting out of their cars to express their frustrations and dragging the climate activists blocking the road in some cases.

Metropolitan Police tweeted: "Officers are dealing with protestors who have blocked parts of the A2, A3, A12 and A40.

"While the roads remain open, there is heavy disruption at all four locations with slow moving traffic while work is underway to remove those who have glued themselves onto the road.

"So far, 38 arrests have been made for disruption of the highway and conspiracy to cause public nuisance.

"We consider protests of this nature unreasonable and are acting as quickly as possible to minimise disruption caused to members of the public using the roads."

Timeline of events (Monday 4 October):

At approximately 0800hrs, protestors blocked the southern approach of Blackwall Tunnel. By 0809hrs police were on scene.

At 0820hrs, protestors moved onto the North Circular Road near Hanger Lane and blocked the road. Officers were on scene by 0828hrs.

At 0845hrs, protestors obstructed the road at the junction at Lochnagar Street at northern approach of the Blackwall tunnel. Officers were on scene within minutes.

At 0846hrs, a number of protestors moved onto Wandsworth Bridge. Officers are on scene by 0900hrs.

The latest update, published around 12:30am, stated that protestors have been removed, roads are now clear and traffic is moving.

This follows on from a new injunction put through by the government to target protestors who cause disruption.

National Highways granted newinjunctioncovering Strategic Road Network in and around London, to ban activitiesthat obstructtrafficandaccess to motorways and major A Roads in and around London.

Insulate Britain says actions will continue until the government makes a meaningful statement indicating that they will insulate all of Britain's 29 million homes by 2030, apparently 'among the oldest and leakiest in Europe'.
