EALING residents are frustrated at the vast amounts of litter that has been building up for a long time on the Grand Union Canal in Hanwell.
Local resident Alan Dye described the amount of litter on Osterley Lock 98 as 'disgraceful' and mentioned that he has contacted the Canal & River Trust on numerous occasions, but nothing had been done about it.
He told Nub News: "It's been building up for months and is so sad to see.
"I and a few other people have got in touch with the authorities, but they have never got back to us."
Lucy Greenwood, the Communications and Campaigns Manager for the Canal & River Trust told Nub News: "It is really shocking to see the litter in the canal.
"It is a sad indictment on society that people think it is acceptable to drop litter."
Both Ms Greenwood and Mr Dye praised the amazing work two Ealing based litter picking groups – Friends of Grand Union Canal and LAGER Can – do in the local area.
The Canal & River Trust Communications Manager said: "We are in regular contact with LAGER Can and Friends of Grand Union Canal and they have been absolutely brilliant at helping to clear litter."
Mr Dye added: "Both these groups do amazing work, but in this case, I think you would need a boat and crane to actually pull this amount of rubbish out, so they need some help, they can't do it all on their own."
Fortunately, the Canal & River Trust reassured Nub News that the litter will be cleared later today.
"Our team is down at the weir with their workboat and 'floating skip' and hope to have the incident cleared up by the end of today," added Ms Greenwood.
