Ealing Council has unveiled plans for the creation of a regional park within the borough, a visionary initiative that is set to redefine urban living while aligning with the council's climate action goals.

The project, still in its infancy, represents an ambitious undertaking that seeks to engage residents, local organisations, and experts to craft a bold vision for Ealing's inaugural regional park.

Why a Regional Park?

The concept of a regional park in Ealing holds immense promise and potential benefits for the community:

  1. Nature Connection: A regional park will provide Ealing residents with abundant opportunities to reconnect with nature, fostering improved health and well-being for all.
  2. Destination Attraction: Ealing aspires to become a newfound destination for nature enthusiasts, culture aficionados, and play enthusiasts. The regional park's allure is set to extend beyond the borough, making Ealing an even more enticing place to reside, work, and explore.
  3. Biodiversity and Climate Resilience: Restoration of natural habitats, an increase in biodiversity, and dedicated space for nature's resurgence will not only bolster Ealing's climate resilience but also ensure improved air quality for future generations. The park will serve as a vital flood resilience measure as well.
  4. Economic Impact: The regional park project is poised to create job opportunities, invigorating the local economy and bolstering community prosperity.
  5. Connected Pathways: A well-connected network of walking and cycling routes will crisscross the park, offering both residents and visitors a chance to relish the great outdoors while promoting active lifestyles.
  6. Sports and Culture: Sports enthusiasts can rejoice as the regional park will house facilities for cricket, tennis, football, and more. Moreover, it dovetails with Ealing's ambition to lead in arts and culture, with discussions underway for the possible addition of a new cultural venue.

Councillor Peter Mason, Leader of Ealing Council, underscores the importance of this project: "We are creating a rare opportunity for an incredible new regional park in our capital.

The Elizabeth II Park has transformed the east of London, and this new regional park has the potential to have a similar positive effect on the borough and West London."

Councillor Deirdre Costigan, Ealing Council's Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Climate Action, highlights the park's significance in addressing environmental concerns:

"Our plan for a new regional park is a massive step forward in the work we are doing to tackle air pollution and reduce the impact of the climate emergency. We promised residents 10 new parks and 50,000 more trees, but a regional park will be a real game changer."

Taking the First Steps

The council will appoint specialists to delve into the details of this ambitious project, which may include an extensive review of golf facilities across the borough.

However, residents and key stakeholders will play a central role in shaping the final plans through an open and transparent consultation process.

The first public consultation will focus on the potential closure of Perivale Park Golf Course, ensuring that community input informs any decisions made.

In the future, residents will also have the opportunity to voice their opinions on the prospect of a new cultural venue within the regional park.

Councillor Polly Knewstub, Cabinet Member for Thriving Communities, emphasises the significance of this review: "A large new park in the borough is a hugely exciting opportunity for us to improve the lives of Ealing residents and lead the capital."

As the project unfolds, it's evident that Ealing Council is steadfast in its commitment to elevating the quality of life for its residents and paving the way for a greener, more sustainable future. Parks, open spaces, and nature-rich environments are at the heart of this vision, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change, improve air quality, and create vibrant, resilient communities.
